CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - Cam Newton says he doesn't have an issue with new offensive coordinator Mike Shula's play calling, even after being limited to a career-low 125 yards passing in the NFL season opener.

Newton believes the Panthers will make adjustments Sunday at Buffalo, saying the team "absolutely" plans to target the Bills injury-plagued secondary and take a few more shots downfield in the passing game.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera on Monday called Carolina's offensive approach too conservative in the team's 12-7 loss to Seattle.

Newton isn't panicking about the loss or the play calling, saying "whether it's 50 shots downfield, 50 slants or 50 running plays, my job is set on each and every play. I want to be part of the solution rather than the problem."

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina coach Larry Fedora says he never saw signs of alleged rules violations reported by Sports Illustrated while an assistant at Oklahoma State.

SI reported improper payments to players from boosters and academic fraud within the program from 2000-11. Fedora was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator under Mike Gundy from 2005-07 before becoming head coach at Southern Mississippi.

Fedora, now in his second year at UNC, called the allegations "shocking" Wednesday evening but says he doesn't know if they're true. He says Gundy and administrators made it clear "that you were going to do things right there, no doubt."

Fedora said he has talked with UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham about the allegations. He also said he expected Oklahoma State officials would be "aggressive" and "transparent" with any investigation.

FORT WORTH, TX (AP) - NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick joined first-responders from Texas and Oklahoma for a Sept. 11 tribute to those who served the region and those who died.

The event Wednesday at Texas Motor Speedway honored 44 first-responders. Among them were those who served communities devastated by tornadoes this year in Moore, Okla., and Granbury, Texas, as well as by a fertilizer plant explosion in the Central Texas town of West.

Harvick is the son of a retired 25-year veteran firefighter in Bakersfield, Calif. The Sprint Cup Series driver is scheduled to race in the Texas 500 on Nov. 3.

The event marked the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (AP) - The Boston Red Sox plan to honor Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski with a statue outside Fenway Park.

The team announced Wednesday that a dedication ceremony will take place before Boston's Sept. 22 game against Toronto. Yastrzemski is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The statue will capture a moment that took place on October 2, 1983, when the Red Sox star tipped his helmet to fans at Fenway Park before the final at-bat.

Yastrzemski says the statue is quite an honor, something he "never could have imagined."

It will be the third statue outside the ballpark's Gate B entrance, and will be placed between the Ted Williams statue and "The Teammates" statue depicting Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, and Williams.

Yastrzemski was an 18-time All-Star. He won the Triple Crown in 1967.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- UNCW Head Coach Adell Harris has announced the addition of David Kim to her staff as Director of Women's Basketball Operations.

Kim fills the position formerly held by Jason Eshbaugh before his promotion to assistant coach last summer. He will be responsible for team travel, practice & game schedules, equipment and summer camps. He will also serve as the facilities liaison for women's basketball as well as special events coordinator.

"I'm happy to add David Kim to our staff," said Harris, who is beginning her second season with the program. "I have known David for 10 years. I know we have added a relentless worker, someone who is passionate about the game of basketball and someone who brings a high level of intelligence to this position. He will elevate the performance of our entire staff. His experiences in the Big South, Atlantic 10 and Big East conferences will immediately elevate our programs' day-to-day operations."

Kim joins Harris' staff after three seasons at Seton Hall, where he served in a similar capacity for Head Coach and Naismith Hall-of-Famer Anne Donovan. Kim assisted in the day-to-day operations with the Pirates, including acting as on-site contact for all team travel and organizing practice and shooting times for away games. He also coordinated the end-of-year team banquet, assisted with the Anne Donovan Basketball Camps and managed all film exchange and video operations during the season.

Prior to his work at Seton Hall, Kim spent two seasons as Director of Women's Basketball Operations at Fordham for Head Coach Kathy Andruzzi. Kim began his coaching career at High Point, serving as Director of Women's Basketball Operations before also taking on assistant coaching duties.

As an assistant coach with the Panthers, Kim played a key role in the development of guards and post players as well as assisting in all aspects of recruiting. He also helped prepare scouting reports, analyzed the skills levels of players and managed and tracked the annual budget while also projecting future budgets. HPU's 2007 squad won the Big South regular season championship and received a WNIT berth, while the 2006 team achieved the highest RPI ranking in school history (#87).

"I am excited to join the UNCW family," said Kim. "I look forward to working with the women's basketball coaching staff and being a part of this great program."

A native of Stamford, Conn., Kim earned his Bachelor's Degree in Analytical Finance from Wake Forest in 2003 and completed his Master's Degree in Sports Studies
